Cell Phone

My speaking skills were not quite up to par to sign up for a cellphone by myself (Yea for helpful cousins)... There are only 2 cellphone providers in S. Korea, LG Telecom and SK telecom, (maybe 3 ...not sure if Show is linked with SK or its its own company.) Its not hard to find a cell phone store they are EVERYWHERE. The prices between the 2 companies are similar so it doesn't make a difference. I made my selection based on the upfront cost. I wasn't interested in the bells and whistles however there are ALOT of neat phones on the market that are ridiculously expensive if you are so inclined. If you think the iPhone is expensive, cell phones here range from 300,000 won and up.

A while ago the government mandated that all the recharging ports on cell phones be standardized. The charging chord that you used on your previous phone will work for you new phone. This will help abate some of the tech clutter in your home.

There are yearly and 2 year contracts. If you go with a 2 year contract you will be able to buy the cell phone cheaper than with a yearly contract. Billing is based on actual minutes used as opposed to a paying for so many minutes per month that you may or may not use. (Ahem, Verizon TAKE NOTE)

I don't anticipate talking on the phone too much so I went with the flat 18 won/10 seconds plan.

When you go sign up for a phone here are some fees to ask about:
1) data plan (even if you don't plan on using it you may still be required to pay for 1 months use)
2) chip (not sure what its for but you need it for your phone)
3) activation fee
You are given the option of paying for the phone lump sum or spread out monthly. At the time that I signed up LG's upfront fees was much less than SK.

Items you need to bring with you:
1) Immigration card
2) bank card (need account no. to setup direct payments)
3) passport (I didn't need it but just in case)

I'm digging...from the states: Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" & Kevin Rudolf "Let it Rock". K-Pop (Korean Pop Music) wise 승리 (Seung-Lee) seems to be branching out with a solo career from Big Bang (빌방) and his debut "Strong Baby" where part of the chorus he says "Crack, crack, crack, crack." One of the networks didn't like that so made him sing "Clap" instead except it comes out sounding like "Crap".

hey, good post. it's strange how cell phones and their terms and conditions are different everywhere.

In Buenos Aires anyone can text and call me and it doesn't cost me anything at all. I just have to pay when I do the texting and the calling. Also, I heard that when you have a plan (say 100 min a month), when the mins. run out, they run out, you can't use your phone until the next month starts! crazy, no?

Wow... I you have to really keep track of your phone usage... I hope there is some sort of alert text letting you know that you are reaching your monthly minutes use.
